Have you never made homemade horse treats?!?! I had never baked horse treats till recently, when I wanted to try baking something new with my sisters. I wanted to make a treat for my horses, but also for my dogs! I wanted simple, yet healthy ingredients. So I kinda combined some different recipes I found online, added my own secret ingredient, and my very own horse & dog treat recipe was born!
I love to bake, so creating this recipe was definitely fun, but you don’t have to be a baker to make this. It is just 6 easy ingredients that are healthy and safe for your horse or dog to eat! So if you’re looking for something to do, are in a creative mood, or want to spoil your pets- give this recipe a try!
Healthy Treats- for Horses & Dogs Recipe
- 2 cups quick oats (you could use any kind of oats, but I used this kind in my treats)
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup shredded carrots
- ¾ cup apple sauce
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- ¼ cup coconut oil *this ingredient isn’t necessary but adds nutritional value, add a little water instead if you don’t have this ingredient*
Directions
Mix ingredients together in a medium sized bowl.
Roll into balls with your hands or use a cookie scoop.
Place on a greased pan about 2 inches apart.
Cook at 350 for 8-10 minutes or until the bottom of the treats is slightly browned.
~Makes about 30 treats.
All my horses really liked these treats, but Max who doesn’t like anything but apples. My dogs also liked them! Which was surprising because you won’t think dogs would like carrot, oat treats. However, my sister’s dog Strider loved them and followed me around hoping for more! Our family dog Digger normally doesn’t like this kind of stuff, but he ate 2 of these!
Give it a try!
Your horse or dog might really like them too! If you’re unsure, maybe try halving the batter so that you only make a few to try. This is simply a basic recipe, try adding your own touch! You could shape them like hearts or add an ingredient! I personally want to try adding peppermint next time! Peppermint is a natural gastric juices stabilizer, and can help prevent colic in horses. I am slightly allergic to peppermint, so I normally crush up any peppermints I get around Christmas time and give them to my horses. These treats would be a great way to administer other healthy supplements to your dogs or horses.
We love our animals, and we love spoiling them! What a great way to spoil your animal friend, while at the same time offering them healthy nutrients! I hope you have fun with this recipe! *Let me know if you give it a try!!*
Tails & trails,
Reese
